Since its inception, SUP Amsterdam has grown to become a standout in the world of stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) in the Netherlands. Founded by Morene Dekker, SUP Amsterdam has made waves not only in Amsterdam and IJburg but internationally as well. With a diverse range of SUP activities, including SUP lessons, SUP yoga, SUP pilates, and group tours, Morene has built a thriving business that continues to attract water enthusiasts from all walks of life. As the first SUP school in the Netherlands, Morene’s journey from a journalist to a SUP entrepreneur has been one of passion, innovation, and persistence.
Morene’s journey into SUP started with a chance interview with Anne Marie Reichman, a former windsurfer. Instantly drawn to the sport, Morene embraced it fully, practicing near her home by the IJsselmeer. As more people saw her on the water and inquired about SUP, she realized there was potential for something bigger. This sparked the idea for the first SUP school in the Netherlands, and soon after, M&M SUP was born. Starting with just a few boards and her enthusiasm, Morene built the business from the ground up.
SUP Amsterdam offers much more than just SUP lessons. Participants can enjoy specialized experiences such as SUP yoga, SUP pilates, and even SUP boot camps, ensuring that there is something for everyone, regardless of fitness level or interests. The school’s offerings cater to individuals, small groups, and those seeking a more intimate connection with nature.
In addition to lessons, Morene organizes private tours through the picturesque canals of Amsterdam, blending fitness with a unique cultural experience. Her focus on quality and safety means that groups are kept small to ensure personalized attention and an enjoyable experience. SUP enthusiasts can also join Morene on international SUP trips to breathtaking locations like Bonaire, Slovenia, and South Africa, with plans to expand to Bali and Thailand in the future.
With over a decade of experience, Morene understands that quality is paramount in the world of SUP. While the market has seen a surge of cheaper, less durable boards, SUP Amsterdam continues to prioritize high-quality SUP boards. Morene believes that investing in a good SUP board ensures better performance and longevity, with well-made boards lasting up to eight years.
SUP Amsterdam caters to all skill levels, from beginners to advanced paddlers. Morene is keen on teaching the correct techniques, ensuring that participants get the most out of their SUP experience. With proper posture and technique, SUP becomes an even more effective full-body workout, making it one of the most rewarding outdoor activities.
Morene has faced numerous challenges throughout her entrepreneurial journey, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the ups and downs, her resilience has allowed SUP Amsterdam to continue growing. Initially, SUP was a new and novel sport that attracted people looking for outdoor activities during the pandemic, but the market has since evolved. Morene has adapted by shifting her focus to higher-end experiences, such as private SUP tours and foreign SUP adventures.
One of her proudest achievements is building two SUP schools from scratch, relying on her own energy, determination, and resources. She reflects on how she grew the business organically, long before social media became a prominent tool for marketing, and is now preparing for the next phase: a complete rebranding of SUP Amsterdam. This new venture will focus on delivering high-end, private SUP tours and expanding the foreign trips she organizes for her clients.
With the rebranding to SUP Amsterdam, Morene aims to position herself as a leader in the SUP industry, both locally and internationally. Her vision includes expanding her customer base through online marketing, enhancing her social media presence, and continuing to deliver top-notch SUP experiences. Morene’s commitment to providing high-quality SUP lessons, tours, and international trips is a testament to her dedication to the sport and her customers.
