The artisanal world of ‘De Ambachtelijke Korf’

on

Established in 2003 by the passionate Jill de Vries, originally as Edelsmid Jillian, this atelier has seamlessly woven the ancient crafts of goldsmithing and pottery into a tapestry of artistic expression.

A fusion of tradition and innovation

Jill de Vries, a certified goldsmith since 2002, discovered her love for clay during a 2007 pottery workshop. Blending this newfound passion with her expertise in goldsmithing, she rebranded the atelier to De Ambachtelijke Korf in 2017. Alongside her husband Erik Hoekstra and three children, they embarked on the adventure of a lifetime in Almere Oosterwold, a green and agricultural haven between Almere and Zeewolde.

In the spring of 2018, their dream took root as they built their new home and expanded the atelier. Now, De Ambachtelijke Korf not only provides a haven for creative workshops but also boasts its own gift shop. The continuous effort to cultivate the garden, home, and atelier has led to the introduction of new botanical workshops using ingredients directly sourced from urban farming and the dye garden.

A warm welcome to all

The atelier invites you to explore their website and, even better, to experience the magic in person. With a cup of tea or coffee in hand, visitors are welcomed to witness the artistic process firsthand. The atelier is not just a workspace; it’s a haven for those seeking a unique blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern creativity.

Workshops for every season

De Ambachtelijke Korf offers a diverse range of workshops, adapting to the changing seasons. From Botanical workshops amidst blooming nature in spring and summer to cozy Clay workshops during the colder months, there’s something for everyone. Whether you’re planning a special group outing or a family/friends day, the atelier is open to customizing experiences for groups of four or more.

A Feast for the artistic soul

  1. Keramiek cursus: A 10-lesson course spanning the year, offering a delightful variety of experiences, from Raku firing to crafting with porcelain clay.
  2. Klei workshops: Small-group sessions that provide an intimate setting for hands-on experiences with clay, perfect for corporate or group outings.
  3. Botanische workshops: From spring to late autumn, immerse yourself in nature with workshops conducted outdoors, featuring walks in the nearby Kathedralenbos and garden tours.
  4. Oude schilders technieken: Explore the enchanting world of old painting techniques, a journey into the captivating realm of ancient crafts.
  5. Zilver & metaal klei: Delve into the world of precious metal clay, a pliable material allowing you to create unique jewelry effortlessly.

The book journey

In addition to their workshops, De Ambachtelijke Korf has ventured into the realm of literature. Jill de Vries has authored a comprehensive 340 page book, showcasing the art of creating pigments from plants, inks, and pigments. The book not only delves into the history of various painting techniques but also offers practical guidance on creating eco-prints on paper.

To bring this labor of love to fruition, the atelier initiated a crowdfunding campaign in June, reaching its goal within two weeks. The book, a visual delight with a scratch-resistant hardcover, is now available for purchase, a testament to the community’s support.
